Christmas parties and alcohol
Christmas parties can be a disaster if there is excess alcohol and poor planning. Remember that each employer has a legal duty of care and this includes workplace arranged or sanctioned functions.
Before that party:
Make sure you have in place policies for harrassment and behaviour.
Let staff know what is unacceptable behaviour and that this can result in disciplinary action.
Plan for transport home. Consider a bus or two to get staff home safely.
Think about having a family day with activities. This will discourage excess drinking.
During the party:
Having plenty of food to help limit alcohol consumption
Consider a small charge for alcoholic drinks but provide lots of free soft drinks and food
Ensurer that waiting staff offer and encourage non-alcoholic drinks and don't provide alcohol to those who are intoxicated
Get sensible staff members to look out for problems and take action promptly
Have a senior manager to talk with if issues arise. Allow them to give out taxi vouchers freely if they are concerned
Watch out for those staff you are younger and not accustomed to alcohol. They are particularly vulnerable.
Afterwards:
Make sure that no-one drinks and drives. Offer cab vouchers and be generous with these.
Have a safe festive season.
