Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental condition that affects focus, impulse control, and emotional regulation. While often diagnosed in childhood, ADHD can persist into adulthood, influencing many aspects of daily life, including performance and wellbeing in the workplace.
Recent data from the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare1 shows a sharp rise in ADHD medication use across the country. In 2023–24, nearly 600,000 Australians were dispensed over 4.6 million prescriptions, up from just 2 per 1,000 people in 2004–05 to 22 per 1,000 today. Psychostimulants like dexamfetamine, methylphenidate, and lisdexamfetamine make up 87% of these prescriptions, with non-stimulant options available for those who need alternatives.
This increase reflects growing awareness, improved diagnostic practices, and expanded access to treatment, especially for adults. Notably, adult women now receive ADHD medications at higher rates than men, reversing historical trends and highlighting the importance of recognising ADHD across all demographics.
Workplace implications are significant. Adults with untreated ADHD may struggle with time management, concentration, and task completion, leading to reduced productivity and increased stress. When properly diagnosed and treated, however, individuals often experience improved focus, better emotional regulation, and enhanced job performance. Employers who understand ADHD can foster more inclusive, supportive environments that benefit everyone.
It’s also important to note that some ADHD medications, particularly stimulant types, can show up in workplace drug tests. Employers should ensure their drug and alcohol policies accommodate prescribed medications and protect employee privacy. Education is also important for workers to be aware that their medications may be detected in a drug test and for managers to better manage this issue in their workplace. DASA can assist with the delivery of customised training and education programmes developed by experts.
