Queensland follows ACT lead on pill testing.

DASA: Queensland government decided to allow pill testing services for the first time as part of its commitment to reduce risks and harms associated with illicit drug use.

Earlier this year, the Queensland government decided to allow pill testing services for the first time as part of its commitment to reduce risks and harms associated with illicit drug use. This decision aims to mitigate drug-related harm and promote informed decision-making among users.

In a statement released by the government, pill testing will occur at either fixed or mobile sites and will chemically test illicit drugs to check for the presence of potentially dangerous substances and chemical compounds. The aim is to change the behaviour of users and reduce the risk of harm from drug use.

Inspired by ACT's Success

The ACT was the first Australian jurisdiction to implement pill testing successfully. The fixed site drug checking initiative has shown promising results in reducing drug-related incidents and building trust between users and health authorities. Queensland's decision to follow suit highlights the growing recognition of the positive impact pill testing can have on public safety.

Both Queensland and the ACT recognize that drug use is a complex social issue that cannot be solved solely through punitive measures. By offering pill testing services, they aim to empower individuals to make safer choices and minimize the risks associated with drug consumption.

In the workplace, raising awareness of drug use (both illicit and prescription) and the implications for safety of the individual and the team, is an important part of every drug and alcohol program.
